About Whalore
If you look at any metazoan phylogeny, a trend becomes glaringly obvious—most phyla are primarily marine. Yet most research still relies on a small set of common model organisms. This leaves large pockets of the animal family tree unaccounted for in evolutionary, ecological, biomedical, and developmental research.
Whalore exists to change that by making it possible for anyone, anywhere, to work with the organisms, tissues, and cells they actually need, even if they are rare or difficult to collect.
We collect, culture, and distribute live aquatic organisms for research, education, and experimental work. In addition, we provide preserved specimens, experimental classroom kits, and soon, primary cell lines and whole-genome sequencing data.
All organisms are responsibly collected and established in laboratory culture so they arrive healthy and ready to work with.

“My objective is to accelerate the adoption of emerging model organisms, cell lines, and biomolecules for novel research”
- Ralph Cerbone, Director
Expanding Access to Marine Research
There are countless species with remarkable biology, yet many remain understudied simply because they are difficult to access. Not every lab has access to marine stations, docks, or boats, and many institutions lack the resources to conduct custom collections.
With many marine species appearing only seasonally, these logistical barriers make research even more challenging.
Whalore aims to bridge this gap by making aquatic model organisms more accessible to researchers around the world. Our goal is to help scientists pursue important biological questions without being limited by location or logistics.
