Atlantic Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus)

$32.00Price

Limulus polyphemus is a benthic marine arthropod that requires a large, stable marine system. A sand substrate is required, as horseshoe crabs spend most of their time partially buried. Tanks should provide substantial horizontal space, as this species is not well suited to tall or narrow systems, a large surface area is key. Gentle water movement is preferred. Avoid strong directional flow or exposed filtration intakes that could trap or injure the animal. Horseshoe crabs are benthic feeders and should be offered sinking foods such as marine invertebrates, mollusk tissue, or other appropriate carnivorous benthic diets. Food should be placed directly on the substrate. Uneaten food and debris should be removed manually to maintain water quality. Limulus polyphemus grows continuously and should not be maintained in small or temporary systems for extended periods of time. These organisms have a relatively long lifespan so be prepared for this upon purchasing. As adults the tank size required can have a minimum of up to 700L. We primarily sell Limulus polyphemus as juveniles which can be kept in 40L systems when they are small.
