Atlantic Slippersnail (Crepidula fornicata)
Crepidula fornicata is a hardy marine gastropod well suited to stable, low-maintenance systems. As a filter feeder, it prefers gentle water movement; weak powerheads or sponge filters are ideal. Avoid directing strong flow at the animals. Slippersnails can be kept in bare-bottom tanks but do best with a hard surface like a rock, shell or slide for attachment. Individuals often stack on one another, which is normal behavior and not a sign of overcrowding. Feeding should consist of phytoplankton several times per week. Take care not to overfeed, as excess nutrients can foul small systems. Crepidula fornicata does better in tanks with filtration rather than a bowl unless you only need them for a brief period of time. Keep in mind their lifespan can be up to a decade and if you maintain them in stable culture you can expect them to live that long.
