Tubular Hydroid (Ectopleura crocea)
Ectopleura crocea is a colonial hydroid commonly found under docks, pilings, and other hard substrates in temperate coastal waters. They can be maintained in small aquariums with gentle water agitation from a sponge filter or airstone. Larger containers are recommended if. Feed freshly hatched Artemia nauplii several times per week and manually remove uneaten food/ debris to prevent water quality decline. Colonies reproduce asexually through stolon growth and budding. Prepare for planula larvae to settle on any hard surfaces in their culture system such as rocks or glass/plastic slides. Spawning can be induced by increasing photoperiod and maintaining stable feeding. Ectopleura crocea does not have a medusa stage and will remain polyps in adulthood.
