Water Flea (Daphnia magna)
Daphnia magna is a freshwater cladoceran commonly used for ecotoxicology, life-history, and physiology research. They are best maintained in clean, well-cycled freshwater with stable temperature and water quality. Gentle aeration is good, but avoid violently strong currents. Feed Daphnia magna with a consistent supply of microalgae such as Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus sp., or Tetraselmis chuii, and supplement with powdered spirulina as needed. They reproduce rapidly through parthenogenesis under favorable conditions, so expect population growth as long as food and water quality are maintained. If you plan to use them for experiments, consider keeping cultures at lower densities with frequent water changes to reduce the chance of a population crash.
